Exchange Student Blog post number 4! :)

Woops, looks like I already failed at updating this blog (referring to the UQ Abroad website blog...not the JOUR1111 one, obviously :) weekly. But at least I have some pretty good excuses (...or not).
In my last post I mentioned the upcoming trip to Byron Bay and that I was going to tell you guys about it...but since this is already waaay back in the past (in exchange student terms, that is. Somehow, time on exchange seems to be running at an entirely different pace - there's so much stuff happening all the time that it feels like you see and experience more things in a week than you'd usually do in a month) I won't tell you much other than that it was absolutely fabulous. If you want to know more about that awesome QUEST trip, head on over to Steven's blog and read his great post (and about his first attempt at surfing, way to go!:).
Regarding the aforementioned excuses for my blogging-laziness: let me just tell you that being sick and leading parallel lifes of an exchange student who likes to party and an exchange student who should somehow get good grades is...challenging! The good news is that the being-sick part has been resolved and I'm feeling great again (major props to UQ Health Services:). The bad news is that somehow a heap of assignments keeps trying to interfere annoyingly with my partying. Living in Brisbane with its amazing sunny weather, surrounded by palm trees and with the beaches near-by, it is so hard to not think of this whole experience as a holiday! I guess this is a problem most students on exchange will experience at some point, but if you're prepared for a few hangover-library session, you'll be alright (and there's always the possibility of grabbing some merlo's coffee and going for a quick nap in the sunny Great Court).
So yeah, amidst my being sick and trying to do some serious multi-tasking, this little blog has been slightly neglected (and this post might not exactly be Pulitzer price-worthy, either). To make up for it (and because I can't just leave this post being one single big fat excuse), here is my List of Random Things I Have Learned On Exchange, Edition 1:

- If you're trying to open a can of beetroot (if I needed one more reason to love Australia, it would be canned beetroot. Seriously.), do not wear your new white sweater.

-The "short walk back home (that seemed like such a good idea at the time)" after a party in the city might turn into an epic 90 minute hike in heels, leaving you sore for 2 days. Distances in Australia are definitely different from what I'm used to, haha.

-If you slip on a wet salad leaf that's lying on the floor in Woolworth's, don't be surprised when 3 employees and the store manager run up to you and embarrassingly excuse themselves over and over again until everyone in the store has noticed your "stunt" ("stunt" meaning "stacking it and throwing the kilogram of apples you just picked up in all directions"). They are just worried you might sue them.

-If you tell an Austrian that you don't know how to dance the Waltz, you might just get an impromptu dance lesson in the middle of an empty road, at night. Given your history of clumsily slipping and tripping (e.g. on random salad leaves), this might be a potentially dangerous idea.

To be continued...
