Fat, sad Australia?!

I came across this article on brisbanetimes.com yesterday and while reading it had to repeatedly wonder how representative the quoted study could be. According to the article and the study, Australia is a "nation of fat, sad drinkers".

This certainly is not the Australia I have gotten to know and love over the past few months. Of course I have only met a very small fraction of the Australian population, but the people I have met are generally fit, healthy people with a great attitude towards life. While you can't see behind a smiling face's surface and see whether a person really is happy, it at least appeared that a lot of people I met are generally happy and positive. Whereas in my home town Zurich, people walk around with frowns on their faces, people are always in a hurry and worry about every little thing. You can literally see how a lot of people are very, very unhappy.

I might have just been very lucky in that I am staying with a very active and happy host family. Plus, at uni you'd typically only meet a well-educated, specific and small fraction of society - so yes, I do realise that Australian reality for most of the population would probably look a lot different from what I have seen so far.

What do you guys think? Is Australia really the "nation of fat, sad drinkers" the article claims it to be?
